Self-Esteem Counselling in Edinburgh & Online

You're not too much, and you're not the problem you think you are.

When the inner critic won't quieten down

Maybe you can list your achievements and still feel like a fraud. Maybe you find it easier to celebrate other people than to believe good things about yourself. Maybe you're exhausted from trying to be easy, agreeable, or impressive enough to be worth keeping around.

Low self-esteem rarely comes from nowhere. It's often built up over years — from things that were said to you, ways you learned to stay safe, or simply never having had a space where you were met without conditions attached.

Self-esteem counselling isn't about forcing yourself to "think positive." It's about understanding where that inner voice came from, so it stops running the show.

Self-esteem counselling session in Edinburgh

What self-esteem counselling with me looks like

01 We start with how you actually talk to yourself, not just what you achieve 02 There's no positive-thinking script or list of affirmations to repeat 03 You set the pace — some of this work is slow, and that's alright 04 We look at where the inner critic came from, and what it might have once protected you from 05 Change tends to come less from being told you're "enough," and more from finally being met as you are

Some of the ways low self-esteem can show up

  • A harsh inner critic that's louder than any kind voice

  • Perfectionism, or feeling like nothing you do is ever quite good enough

  • Imposter syndrome at work, university, or in relationships

  • People-pleasing and difficulty saying no

  • Comparing yourself to others and always coming up short

  • Struggling to accept compliments, praise, or success

  • Self-esteem that's been shaken by a relationship, loss, or big life change

  • Confidence that quietly holds you back from things you actually want

You're not lazy. You're not broken. You're not too much. Reach out and we can talk about what's actually going on underneath.

Person-centred therapy for perfectionism and imposter syndrome, Edinburgh

The different shapes low self-esteem can take

Perfectionism

Perfectionism counselling in Edinburgh often starts with the belief that "good enough" isn't. We'd look at where that standard came from, and what it's actually protecting you from feeling. When perfectionism turns into overwork, it often overlaps with burnout.

Imposter syndrome

As an imposter syndrome therapist working in Edinburgh, I hear this a lot: success doesn't seem to change how you feel about yourself. We'd explore why the evidence never quite lands. If it started at university, therapy for students is built around exactly this.

People-pleasing

People-pleasing therapy looks at what happens when you say yes to everyone but yourself — and what it might feel like, and risk, to finally set a boundary.

Self-esteem that's always been there

For some people, this isn't new. Low self-esteem therapy in Edinburgh can still help even if it's something you've carried for as long as you can remember, rather than something a single event caused.

What to expect

The free intro call

A free 20-minute call — by phone or video — to talk a little about what self-esteem looks like for you right now, ask questions, and see if we're a good fit.

Your first session

We'll start to get a sense of your inner critic — where it's loudest, what it says, and where it might have come from. There's no need to arrive with answers.

Ongoing sessions

Sessions last 50 minutes, usually weekly to begin with. Self-esteem tends to shift gradually rather than all at once — many clients notice small changes in how they talk to themselves before anything else feels different.

You don't need to earn the right to feel better about yourself

A lot of people put off this kind of work because their self-esteem feels "not bad enough" to justify therapy, or because they're more used to focusing on everyone else. You don't need permission to want to feel differently about yourself.

FAQs

Your questions, answered

Is low self-esteem the same as low confidence? +

They overlap, but aren't identical. Confidence is often about specific skills or situations; self-esteem is closer to your underlying sense of your own worth. It's common to feel confident in some areas and still carry low self-esteem underneath.

Can therapy really change how I see myself? +

It won't happen overnight, and it isn't about repeating affirmations until you believe them. But over time, being consistently met with honesty and without judgement tends to change the relationship people have with themselves — often more than self-help alone can.

I don't have low self-esteem about everything, just certain areas — is that still something to bring? +

Yes. Self-esteem is rarely all-or-nothing. Bringing the specific areas where it shows up — work, relationships, appearance, whatever it is for you — is exactly the kind of thing we'd explore.

How long does this kind of work usually take? +

There's no fixed timeline. Some people notice a shift within a few months; for others, especially where self-esteem is tied to longer-standing patterns, it's a longer piece of work. We'll check in regularly on how it feels.

Do you offer self-esteem counselling online as well as in Edinburgh? +

Yes — in person in Edinburgh, or securely online across Scotland and the rest of the UK.
