Anxiety Therapy in Edinburgh & Online

A steady, non-judgemental space to understand your anxiety — not just manage its symptoms.

When anxiety won't switch off

Maybe it shows up as a racing mind at 3am, a knot in your stomach before anything important, or a constant, low-grade sense that something's about to go wrong. Maybe it's panic that arrives out of nowhere, or worry so familiar you've almost stopped noticing it's there.

You might have tried to think your way out of it — reasoning with yourself, googling symptoms, making lists, staying one step ahead of whatever you're afraid might happen. And still, the anxiety doesn't fully let go.

Anxiety therapy with me isn't about switching off how you feel or being told to "just relax." It's about understanding what your anxiety is trying to protect you from, so it doesn't have to work so hard — and so you don't have to either.

What anxiety therapy with me looks like

I won't hand you a worksheet or a fixed programme to work through. Anxiety doesn't tend to respond well to being managed from the outside — it tends to ease when you feel genuinely understood, not corrected.

01 We start with what anxiety actually feels like for you, not a checklist of symptoms 02 You set the pace — there's no pressure to "get to the root of it" before you're ready 03 I won't tell you your worry is irrational or that you should just stop thinking that way 04 We look at what your anxiety might be trying to do for you, even when it doesn't feel helpful 05 Change tends to come from feeling steady in the relationship first, then in yourself

I work integratively from a person-centred base, rather than a fixed, structured programme like CBT. For many people, that relational, at-your-pace way of working is what finally makes a difference — especially if you've already tried to "manage" your anxiety and it hasn't stuck.

Some of the ways anxiety can show up

  • Constant or racing worry that's hard to switch off

  • Panic attacks, or the fear of having one

  • Social anxiety — dreading being watched, judged, or "found out"

  • Health anxiety and worry about your body

  • Anxiety that lives in your body — a tight chest, restlessness, trouble sleeping

  • Overthinking and replaying conversations or decisions

  • Anxiety that's always been part of you, or that's arrived more recently

Not sure if what you're experiencing counts as "anxiety" or something else entirely? It doesn't need a label. Reach out and we can talk it through in a free intro call.

Different kinds of anxiety I work with in Edinburgh & online

Panic attacks

If you're searching for panic attack therapy in Edinburgh, it's usually because the panic feels unpredictable — like it can hit anywhere, anytime. We'd start by understanding your body's specific pattern, so the fear of the next attack has less grip on you.

Social anxiety

Social anxiety counselling in Edinburgh often starts with the fear of being watched, judged, or getting something "wrong" in front of others. We'd look at where that fear comes from, and gently build your tolerance for being seen as you actually are.

High-functioning anxiety

Not all anxiety looks like struggling. High-functioning anxiety therapy is often what people are looking for when they're achieving, coping, and holding everything together on the outside — while feeling one step from unravelling underneath.

What to expect

The free intro call

Before we begin, I offer a free 20-minute introductory call — by phone or video. It's a low-pressure chance to describe what your anxiety feels like day to day, ask any questions, and get a sense of whether we're a good fit. There's no obligation.

Your first session

We'll take time to understand your anxiety in context — when it started, what tends to trigger it, and what you've already tried. There's nothing to prepare. Most people feel some anxiety about the first session itself, and that's completely normal.

Ongoing sessions

Sessions last 50 minutes, usually weekly to begin with. Many clients find that as things settle, the anxiety takes up less space — and sessions can move to fortnightly or beyond, at your pace.

You don't have to wait for it to get worse

A lot of people put off getting support for anxiety because it feels "manageable," or because they worry they're not anxious enough to need help. You don't have to be in crisis to reach out — catching it early often makes the work lighter, not harder.

If you need urgent support

Therapy is not a crisis service. If you're feeling unsafe or in crisis, Samaritans are free to call any time on 116 123.

In Scotland, Breathing Space 0800 83 85 87 — Mon–Thu 6pm–2am, Fri 6pm–Mon 6am — offers support for low mood and overwhelm.

In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

FAQs

Your questions, answered

Do you use CBT for anxiety? +

No — I work person-centred and integratively, rather than through a structured CBT programme. Many people find this relational, at-your-pace approach helps with anxiety just as effectively, particularly if a more structured programme hasn't worked for them before. If you're specifically looking for CBT, it's worth knowing that before we start, so we can be sure this is the right fit for you.

Can therapy help with panic attacks? +

Yes. We'd look at what tends to trigger panic for you, what happens in your body when it hits, and — over time — build a steadier relationship with the fear itself, rather than trying to avoid or suppress it.

I'm on medication for anxiety — can I still have therapy? +

Yes. Therapy and medication can work well alongside each other. I'm not able to prescribe or advise on medication, so any changes there should go through your GP, but we can absolutely work together while you're taking it.

How many sessions will I need? +

There's no fixed number. Some people find a few months brings real relief; others prefer ongoing support. We'll check in regularly on how things feel and how you'd like to continue.

Do you offer anxiety therapy online as well as in Edinburgh? +

Yes. I see clients in person in Edinburgh and online across Scotland and the rest of the UK, using secure, encrypted video.
